Extracto Exacto!

The wife and I have been walking a whole lot around our neighborhood. We do not have bikes, or a car so walking and bussing it is it for us. But this is the best way to really figure out your hood and to check out what is happening. So we have been enjoying gorgeous weather, beautiful boutiques, super friendly people and we found a new coffee shop that we are basically in love with.

Extracto. Owned by a buddy of a great friend of mine and Ritual co-owner Tookie.

It's super clean, open, friendly, and above all comfortable in the environment. No attitude here at all, which is refreshing because I know the stereotype and often proven true of the nasty barista is pervasive in any city you go to that knows its coffee. These kids are great, and I am thrilled to see them thriving in the neighborhood. Their FB70 is beautiful, and PID'ed. Oh yeah.

yeah!

Portland is super beautiful amd friendly. and man is it cheaper that SF. Christ! Stumptown Coffee everywhere, good beer, good food, good wine and tattoo shops and lots of music and art. what more could you ask for in a city?

I already miss my Ritual kids, a whole lot. But I don't miss shelling out the money to pay the rent for our tiny one bedroom in Upper Hayes.

I am excited to get back into the coffee thing, and keep learning about it. There is a meet the producer night on the 24th. I cannot wait to sit and listen to these coffee farmers talk about their trade. It will be good. Really good.

Mad props to Gimme! Coffee's new space! HOLLAH!!!!

You an May ever want to hang out, just drop by, we can grab dinner or drinks. You two are my favourite new Portlanders. See you at the thing at the place tonight.

This coffeehouse understands the importance of having not only a supply of well-prepared beans, but the subtlies of preparing the drink properly and consistently, as well.

Many, many coffeehouses are run by people who do not seem to realize that for many espresso addicts, the hope of getting a good, well-prepared espresso drink is what enables them to crawl out of bed, in the dark Portland monrings of winter, and go to work. Such a person does not want an inconsistent preparation of a superior drink to start of his/her day on a down note, since this hope is essentially what stands between themselves and daily lethargy.

Chris, the owner, understands this very well, and the barristas he has chosen to hire understand this, as well.

For the sort of espresso addict I have described, the drink, itself, is sufficient, but to really solidify their grip on the day, pastries of superior quality are required. Again, Chris has seen to this, and the pastries he features at Extracto are not the sugar-glazed building blocks you find at Starbuck's, but a much more refined product--the sort that tells you in an instant that the baker probably owns his own business, and is committed to a product he would like to be associated with.

In short, if you are serious about coffee, and if you are ever in the area (Killingsworth & 29th, NE Portland, near the Alberta St. art scene), do yourself a BIG favor: stop in and have your favorite espresso drink. See what you think.

I do not believe you'll be disappointed.

I have to agree that Extracto has an inviting atmosphere, and every drink I have ever ordered has been delicious. These people obviously know the importance of adjusting their espesso grind when the barometric pressure changes. I absolutely abhore Starbucks, and I have never tasted anything decent pressed from their beans. That being said, I must offer one bit of advice to newbies @ Extracto: Do not let on to the owner if you prefer a sizeable amount of cream in your americano or coffee. After asking him to leave extra room in my personalized version of an americano, the owner insisted that I, instead, pay for a latte since that extra room would be filled with cream from the condiment table. Sure, everyone has a bad day, but no matter how much I love their atmosphere and drinks, this encounter has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Hanna, whoever you are, you got some nerve labeling the barista behind the counter as "a total loser." Hopefully your snide way of showing off your bloated sense of self will catch up to you sooner than later. You are probably too self-absorbed to realize how lame you've made yourself look without anyone even having to see a photo of you, good or bad! Ever heard of a blurry picture turned bad?
